About Ear Infections

An ear infection occurs when bacteria or viruses infect the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum. This can lead to fluid buildup, swelling, and discomfort. Ear infections are more common in children because their ear structures are still developing, but they can also happen in adults.

Common Questions About Ear Infections

What Are the Symptoms of an Ear Infection?

Ear infections can be painful, and symptoms may vary depending on the age of the patient:

In Children:

  • Ear pain, especially when lying down
  • Trouble hearing or responding to sounds
  • Tugging or pulling at the ear
  • Fever
  • Fussiness or irritability
  • Fluid drainage from the ear

In Adults:

  • Ear pain
  • Drainage of fluid from the ear
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Fever

What Causes an Ear Infection?

Ear infections are usually caused by bacteria or viruses and can often follow a cold, sinus infection, or respiratory infection. Factors that increase the risk include:

  • Upper respiratory infections such as colds or the flu
  • Allergies that cause nasal congestion
  • Environmental factors, like secondhand smoke or air pollution
  • Seasonal changes – ear infections are more common during colder months
  • Age and anatomy – children have smaller Eustachian tubes, which can make drainage difficult

How to Prevent Ear Infections?

Ear infections are common, especially in children, but there are ways to help reduce the risk:

  1. Avoid Smoke Exposure: Smoke from cigarettes or other sources can irritate the ear and respiratory passages, increasing infection risk.
  2. Practice Good Hygiene: Frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with sick individuals helps prevent colds and flu that often lead to ear infections.
  3. Breastfeed if Possible: Breastfeeding for at least six months can strengthen an infant's immune system, reducing ear infections.
  4. Keep Vaccinations Up to Date: Vaccines like the flu shot and pneumococcal vaccine help prevent infections that can lead to ear problems.
  5. Feed Upright: If bottle-feeding, keep your child upright to prevent milk from entering the ear tubes.

By taking these steps, families can help protect their children from painful ear infections and promote healthier ears.

When Should You Seek Medical Help for Ear Infections?

While some ear infections can resolve on their own, it’s important to see a healthcare provider if:

  • Symptoms persist for more than a couple of days
  • Pain is severe or getting worse
  • You or your child have a high fever
  • Fluid is draining from the ear
  • Symptoms seem to keep recurring

Especially for young children, timely care can prevent complications and relieve discomfort.

How Are Ear Infections Treated?

Treatment will vary based on age, severity, and whether the infection is bacterial or viral. Common treatment options include:

  • Observation: In some cases, especially with mild symptoms, we may recommend watching symptoms for a few days to see if they resolve on their own.

  • Antibiotics: For bacterial infections or persistent symptoms, we may prescribe antibiotics. It’s important to complete the full course of medication to prevent a return of the infection.

  • Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage pain and fever.

  • Warm compress: A warm compress held against the ear can help relieve discomfort.

In cases of chronic or recurrent infections, additional options, such as ear tube placement, may be considered.
