Shingles

About Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Today, we’re shedding light on shingles, a condition that can affect anyone who has previously had chickenpox. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body. It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)—the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After someone recovers from chickenpox, this virus can remain dormant in the nervous system and may reactivate years later as shingles.

Common Questions About Shingles

What is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body. It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After someone recovers from chickenpox, this virus can remain dormant in the nervous system and may reactivate years later as shingles.

What are the Symptoms of Shingles?

Shingles symptoms often appear in stages. They can include:

  • Pain, burning, or tingling in a specific area on one side of the body or face.
  • A red rash that appears a few days after the pain, usually confined to one side of the body or face.
  • Fluid-filled blisters that may break open and crust over.
  • Itching or sensitivity in the affected area.
  • Fever, headache, or fatigue may accompany the rash.

If you experience symptoms like these, it’s important to contact us right away—early diagnosis and treatment can help manage pain and reduce complications.

What Causes Shingles?

Anyone who’s had chickenpox is at risk of developing shingles. The exact reason the virus reactivates is not always clear, but certain factors can increase the likelihood, including:

  • Aging: People over 50 have a higher risk.
  • Weakened Immune System: Conditions that lower immunity, like cancer, HIV/AIDS, or certain medications, can increase the risk.
  • Stress: High levels of stress can sometimes trigger shingles.

How can I Prevent Shingles?

For those over 50, a shingles vaccine can reduce the risk of developing shingles and minimize the severity if it does occur. Speak with us to see if the vaccine is right for you.

How is Shingles Treated?

While there is no cure for shingles, treatments can ease the symptoms and speed recovery.

Common treatments include:

  • Antiviral Medications: These medications, such as acyclovir or valacyclovir, can help reduce the severity and duration of symptoms if taken within 72 hours of the rash appearing.

  • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers may help manage pain.

  • Topical Creams: Certain creams can soothe the rash and ease itching.

  • Corticosteroids: In some cases, corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain.
